02-Jul-12 6 moments, Technology and Wimbledon

In Blog, Personal, Sports, Technology on July 1, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Last night we went to Georgina’s Dynamic Dance show in Kingston and it was absolutely brilliant. Well done to all the girls (and boys) once again and a big thanks to Emily Stephenson for developing what was a very entertaining show.

Unfortunately we missed the Euro 2012 final. Did I really think Italy could beat Spain! What a side this is? Roll on the next major championship (World Cup in Brazil). At least some of the team will be in their 30’s!

As confirmed in my blog yesterday, I now have 6 months to commit to completing these 6 personal moments:

– Run a half marathon
– Finish our loft (flooring, insulation and train set)
– Visit a new island in the UK
– Cook and Eat a fish I catch
– Get my blog on the freshly pressed homepage on WordPress
– Discover and meet a new relative

I think I need to start planning at least 2 or 3 of these over the next few weeks or I could have a lot to do in the winter months.
So with this in mind….
Must think about how I discover and meet a new relative! Any thoughts?

Islands? Already discounted are Wight, Sheppey and Barry, as all been done already! That leaves the Channel islands, Man and some Scottish ones.

Half marathons. I need a decent flat one in London or Surrey around September or October. Any ideas?

After a weekend of no technology updates, I have been searching high and low for some interesting stuff on Twitter today.

After last week’s news of Google’s new android release, 4.1, which is called Jelly Bean, this mobility article today claims that the new version will be significantly faster than Ice Cream Sandwich, the previous release. Samsung’s flagship mobility device, the Galaxy S III, is likely to be one of the first of their range of devices to get this release in the last quarter of this year.

Facebook were again in the news today with an unannounced email switch causing loads of their customers to lose emails! The change, which was announced last week in this BBC article has apparently not gone as smooth as expected according to this Forbes article! Another drop for their share price?

Sony appear to be fighting back in the games war and investing in cloud technology. This BBC article claims that it is acquiring a cloud-based gaming service from Gaikai for £242m! It is thought Sony will use the Gaikai technology to offer a broader portfolio of games to owners of its PlayStation 3 consoles. This is clearly going to be used to develop the next generation (PS4) device!

The second week of Wimbledon starts today with the business part of the tournament (4th round in both Ladies and Gentlemen’s) taking part. My particular favourite is the pairing of Murray and Cilic, which should be a fascinating encounter. I just hope that Cilic has fully recovered from the second longest match in Wimbledon history (5 hours and 31 minutes) that he took part in on Saturday. My betting is on Murray, but no doubt it will not be easy, as it never is with a British player!

To close, you are probably wondering why I have a picture of NASA at the beginning? It’s because the Kennedy Space Centre celebrated it’s 50th anniversary yesterday. KSC opened July 1, 1962, as NASA’s Launch Operations Center during the Space Race with the Soviet Union. The Merritt Island complex was renamed Kennedy Space Center on Nov. 29, 1963, one week after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated! A lot has happened in the last 50 years. I’m sure things will look very different in another 50….

  1. Eel Pie Island. It’s not far.

  2. Many thanks for the mention Gary! Love the blog, will be reading more often as you write so intelligently and I think I may learn some new things from you. Good luck with reaching your goals, always great to push yourself to achieve new things.
