03-Sep-12 Remember those baggy trousers?

As initially mentioned in my blog yesterday, I had a fantastic piece of good news over the weekend, as my aspiration to track down and meet a new long lost relative started to come to fruition.

Last week, I had wrote a letter to four people who I had been able to track as being cousins. The wife of one of these rang at the weekend and did not only confirm that we were related, but also closed out a long lost personal mystery for me.

The mystery dates back to my junior school, as one of my class mates, Graham, was also a Lengthorn, as well as his brother, Geoffrey, in an older year. At the time, although sharing an unusual name, my dad did not know the link, although we always assumed we must be related.

Only one of two photos I could find of my primary school! I was born in the building to the right.

The lady who rang at the weekend is their mum, and because of the work I have done with the tree, we now know that Graham, Geoffrey and me are 2nd cousins, once removed!

Shirley, their mum, was able to share some fascinating insights in to my mum as well, as they used to chat whilst waiting for us kids to come out of school! When I started this journey, to uncover more information about my mum was beyond my wildest expectations.

As if it could not get any better, I was able to find out more about her husband Alan’s (Joseph) brother and sisters and their children and now realise that I have a lot more connections than I could have dreamed of.

One other surprise from this trail is that the world number three in Squash is also related. Laura Lengthorn Massaro is a 2nd cousin (1x removed).

A Lengthorn at the top of their game!

I’m still to hear from the other three relatives, so could be a lot more nice surprises yet and the next stage is hopefully to catch up with Graham and Geoffrey on email.
