08-Jan-13 Art of blogging!

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports, Technology on January 8, 2013 at 6:07 pm

We are 8 days into the New Year, and, as most normal folk complain about their weight gain and excessive drinking over the seasonal period, there are a bunch of us talking about our aches, pains and strains from only one thing. Janathon!

On my own journey home this evening, normally a backlog of work and technology challenges would fill my mind, but tonight it was only how far would I be able to run and the possible content of my subsequent blog!

And so to tonight’s run; unbelievable I know, but it was dry yet again for the 3 miles I ran (Grainne ran 2 miles).

After my technology overview yesterday, it occurred to me that there are a number of WordPress features that people are not using as a standard for their sites, which is a shame, as I think some are very good sites out there (put mine to shame), so tonight a few tips for my colleagues who are new to this excellent blogging tool.

The WordPress Application for the iPad and Android devices is much easier to use than the web site. I use it all the time for creating and editing my blogs.

Only publish your blog when completely OK with the final product. Using draft and private versions first, you can play with the content until your heart is content.

Although you can choose to automatically publish your site to many social media sites, I typically manually publish my content, as you can then add any additional comments or hash tags to the post.

Play with the theme and settings to allow people to follow you using their email address and or reader or comment on your blog. Great for building your following and interacting.

Use the reader to keep your followed blogs in one place. Only discovered this recently and great for following those interesting blogs on WordPress.

Hope this helps a little bit? If anyone else has got any other useful tips to add, I will publish them tomorrow with some more of mine?

My stats according to MapMyRide:
Day 8 – 4.85km / 3.01 miles
Janathon to date – 28.78km / 17.88 miles
Total Janathon hours running – 3.18
Days running in dry conditions – 8/8!
