14-Jul-13 British 10k!

In Blog, Personal, Sports on July 14, 2013 at 5:41 pm

So today was probably one of the warmest days of the year and also the date of the British 10k in London.

After many weeks of training and suffering (OK, it’s not been that bad), I felt I was as prepared as well as I could be. Maybe not ideal to be running only 4 days after the JP Morgan challenge, but that’s life.

I had decided from the very start that I just wanted to make it an enjoyable experience; especially as the run the other night was very painful. It all started well with me settling in to a very consistent stride for the first 3k with a water stop complemented by seeing my nearest and dearest (Grainne, Thomas and Georgina).

It was then the hardest part of the course, as the next 5k was run in mainly bright sunshine and one of the warmest days in London this year. Thankfully at 8k (Westminster Bridge), it was nice to see my loved ones yet again and this gave me the encouragement I needed for the last couple of kilometres.

By 9k, my legs were starting to feel a tad heavy, but I was able to pick things up and come in a respectable time of 1 hour and 54 seconds. Just like the last run, 50+ seconds divided me between my target!

It was a great event that was awe inspiring to run considering the range of abilities that ran to support many charities. Hats off to everyone who completed, but especially the SThree team, some of which made this photo shoot at Trafalgar Square with SOS Children’s Villages.

11-Jul-13 Warm up for 10k…

In Blog, Personal, Sports on July 11, 2013 at 8:06 am

So after several weeks of Park Runs and training, last night I completed the 5.6k JP Morgan Challenge at Battersea Park with a number of my work chums from SThree.

Some would say conditions were ideal, as for the rest of us amateurs, it was extremely warm and therefore a tad draining.

After a couple of pints the previous night to ensure I was fully hydrated, I felt I was feeling in good shape; that was until I started running!

Over the last few weeks, I seem to have been struggling from a stomach pain on and off, and last night, I had to bear the brunt of this for all 3 and half miles, which was not a pleasant experience.

Saying that, I dug deep and completed my run in 30 minutes and 50 seconds meaning I missed my target by 50 seconds!

Saying that, I have to be pleased with this and hopefully this sets me up well for the British 10k I am completing on Sunday; also with some of my work colleagues. Please feel free to sponsor me at the following link, as raising money for SOS Children’s villages.

Well done to all of our team from SThree who gave up their time to run last night whether that be to get a great time or simply get round; superb effort!

03-Feb-13 No more Janathon!

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on February 3, 2013 at 11:41 am

On Thursday, after my final blog of Janathon, I promised an update the next day; well here’s that update two days later, as I’ve quite enjoyed not having to press out a blog or run for that matter!

My final Janathon total was 100.57 miles, which I ran in just over 20 hours; I ran every day, apart from one day, when I was restricted to Just Dance on the Wii!

20130203-115012.jpg

In one week I ran / walked a marathon, whilst over the month, I completed nearly 4 marathons! The longest run in any one day being 6.05 miles,

It’s now all about the money. As I write my blog, we have now raised £693 across our multitude of sites. If you’ve been inspired by our Janathon feat, enjoyed our blogs or just want to support a very worthy cause, please donate just a small amount today on our charity website, as everything we raise will be doubled by SThree.

Our original aim was to raise £1,000, but with SThree doubling the amount, we now have a great chance of raising £1,500. So please please dig deep and donate anything you can. It will be much appreciated.

From today, although I am going to continue running (3 / 4 times a week), I will start going back to blogging about technology and specifically things that are enabling consumerisation (tablets, mobile and applications).

Saying that, Janathon has truly inspired me to not only keep fit, but also to try and support more charitable causes this year. Whether that be organisations like SOS Children’s Villages or underprivileged children in other areas who would love the opportunity to develop their skills or just work!

I’ve already got plans with some work colleagues for a big walk in the summer; more information to follow over the coming weeks, plus I’m hoping to continue with my goals and complete an half marathon at some point.

31-Jan-13 Janathon ends on a century

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on January 28, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Janathon and the 100 miles has been achieved, hence I need to stick by my word and donate another £50 to our charity.

A full blog with the highlights will be written tomorrow, as I am now going to down a few hard earned pints.

Well done to everyone who did Janathon.

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 31 – 2.48 miles
Janathon to date – 100.57 miles

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.

The hard work has now all been done and now its time for us to beg for a few coppers to make it all worthwhile. We have raised a total of nearly £400 towards our target of £1,000 across a number of donation sites. SThree will double what ever we raise, so please dig deep and donate, as even a small amount will mean a lot.

30-Jan-13 98 and not out!

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on January 28, 2013 at 6:25 pm

After my penultimate run today I feel like a cricketer who is stuck on 98 with one day to play of a final test.

Although those last couple of miles should now be a doddle, I am worried that one early mistake tomorrow evening and all my hard work will be undone.

As I am playing football to finish Janathon, it is riskier than my normal runs. Saying all that, I now feel our team from SThree and all those other Janathoners have done themselves proud in a month, which has thrown snow, ice, wind and rain at us.

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 30 – 2.05 miles
Janathon to date – 98.09 miles
1.91 miles to achieve in the final day to complete 100 miles.

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.

The countdown to the end of Janathon is truly on with just a day to go. We have raised a total of nearly £400 towards our target of £1,000 across a number of donation sites. SThree will double what ever we raise, so please dig deep and donate, as even a small amount will mean a lot.

29-Jan-13 Mind over matter.

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on January 28, 2013 at 6:25 pm

I’ve struggled through today with my cold, but have drawn inspiration to run tonight from the words of support on my blog; I also found this on a fellow colleagues blog, which I thought was a great image of mind over matter!

image

I was unsure how far I would push the body (or mind) tonight. I had to do at least 3.2 miles, which I did with Grainne, but I then went on and completed 5.5 miles, which was very satisfactory.

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 29 – 5.5 miles
Janathon to date – 96.04 miles
3.96 miles to achieve in the last two days to complete 100 miles.

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.

The countdown to the end of Janathon is truly on with only 4 days to go. We have raised a total of nearly £400 towards our target of £1,000 across a number of donation sites.

SThree will double what ever we raise, so please dig deep and donate, as even a small amount will mean a lot to these individuals.

28-Jan-13 Sick!

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on January 28, 2013 at 1:53 pm

As if the running was not enough, I have now fallen foul to a cold bug.

Hardly ideal with only 4 days left, hence a very short blog today, as although we went , it was a real struggle to do the 3.4 miles, I am now contemplating bed again, as I am sure my body is going to pay for this!

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 28 – 3.4 miles
Janathon to date – 90.54 miles
9.46 miles to achieve in 3 days to complete 100 miles.

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.

The countdown to the end of Janathon is truly on with only 4 days to go. We have raised a total of nearly £350 towards our target of £1,000 across a number of donation sites. SThree will double what ever we raise, so please dig deep and donate, as even a small amount will mean a lot.

27-Jan-13 Spot on target!

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on January 27, 2013 at 5:58 pm

Sunday running; how good was this today in warm weather and sunshine. So different to many of our runs this month.

After yesterday’s and Friday’s struggle, I planned out a 3 mile route today that I knew would result in a Costa coffee. In fact, my planning was spot on, with MapMyRun totalling 2.99 when we got there.

20130127-181521.jpg

How good was this as a target for the day!

As my goal was to run 3.21 for the day, we ran a bit further to hit this target.

20130127-181823.jpg

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 27 3.21 miles
Janathon to date – 87.14 miles
Miles per day to hit 100 – 3.21 miles

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.

The countdown to the end of Janathon is truly on with only 4 days to go. We have raised a total of £192 towards our target of £1,000. SThree will double what ever we raise, so please dig deep and donate, as even a small amount will mean a lot.

26-Jan-13 More cake.

In Blog, charity, Personal, Sports on January 26, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Again the legs were feeling wary today, after what has been a very long month of running, but thankfully the sun was shining and it was dry.

After our cake and coffee adventure a couple of weeks ago, we decided to repeat the task today; Grainne choosing a Carrot Cake, whilst I was more adventurous and went for the Eccles Cake (really)!

20130126-143408.jpg

Although named after the English town of Eccles, Eccles cakes do not currently have Protected Geographical Status, so may be manufactured anywhere and still labelled as “Eccles” cakes. Fascinating eh (maybe not)!

Today I added another 3.74 miles (Grainne chipped in with her own 3 miles).

20130126-144636.jpg

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 26 – 3.74 miles
Janathon to date – 83.93 miles
Miles per day to hit 100 – 3.21 miles

To close today, I must mention that Millwall were the first team to reach the 5th round of the FA Cup, after what was a fantastic result last night. Well done to Lewisham born John Marquis, a life long fan, who scored the winner. Fingers crossed for a big tie in the draw on Sunday!

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.

25-Jan-13 When the going gets tough…

In Blog, Personal, Sports on January 25, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Today was the toughest run to date and somehow I managed to get through on pure will power, as the legs certainly felt wary tonight.

As it’s Friday night (party night) it seemed appropriate to play a proper tune from the eighties, which somehow summed up how I felt when I finally got home!

Tonight, albeit slowly, I smashed my target for Janathon (75 miles) and am now in touching distance of 100 after completing another 5.5 miles this evening.

20130125-202328.jpg

My stats according to MapMyRun:
Day 25 – 5.51 miles
Janathon to date – 80.19 miles
Miles per day to hit 100 – 3.3 miles

Me and a number of my colleagues at SThree are doing Janathon for orphaned children through SOS Children’s Villages. Our goal is to try and raise £1,000 through our own and others donations.
